company. not even a car guy by his own admission. he is speaking openly about the time at gm in his brand new book, american turn around. he is here with us now. i remember when they said ed whitacre would be the guy? i thought, ed whitacre from at&t? i think it is so fascinating in this book how you talk about being brought in, getting the call steve rattner and your first reaction was what? >> my first reaction was no. i know nothing about cars. i can drive one. i can start one and drive and that's it. liz: why were you the right guy for what is now indelibly marked in our history at a time when general motors almost went entirely under and disappeared? >> i'm not sure i was the right guy but it worked out okay. so maybe i was. but i had worked at a big company. a unionized company. he had worked there a long time. gm was a big company. i knew something about organizations and people. so maybe that's why i got the call. liz: you also two into your early history. that was you grew up thinking you would work for the railroads just like your dad. >> i did. liz: it has been an interesting j

and south america all delivered returns. in the fourth quarter, overall gm profits were up 89% from 2011. looking ahead, the company says it has taken significant action to put itself on a path for growth in 2013. however, ahead of the release of new models of pickup trucks, analysts are concerned gm may be forced to cut production, due to a backup of its current inventory. a "spirited" trade in the beverage industry is sending traders on a wild ride. the justice department was blocking the merger of budweiser and corona. to get the deal done, anheuser bush in bev, which owns bud, is agreeing to sell grupo modelo's brewery in mexico to wine and spirits maker constellation brands. constellation spiked above $43 yesterday on the news as traders who were shorting the stock are forced to buy it into options expiration today. . the new year brought new momentum to automakers. ford, gm and chrysler all sold more cars and trucks. chrysler had its best january in 5 years, with a 16% jump. ford's sales rose 22% from last year, its best january since '06, and gm's sales topped 16%. its estmated that total auto sales hit 15.5 million last month. foreign brands helped that number. sales at toyota jumped a whopping 27% in january. and volkswagen celebrated its best january since 1974 - a 6.7% increase. demand for the accord helped the numbers at honda. demand for the model pushed sales up 12.7% consumer reports is out with its list of best car brands. toyota, ford, honda and chevrolet rank as the top brands with best consumer perception. motorists judged the automakers based on safety, value, performance, design, technology and environmental friendliness. it was a major plus for toyota to top the list, considering its recall issues past and present. fourth-quarter earnings wrapped up with a mixed bag of results for mattel, exxon, and tyson. mattel's profits dropped 17%, hit by a litigation charge earlier in the ye

agencies ally and gm and aig have put pay packages from the t.a.r.p. money of more than $5 million even though they violated the guidelines of the bailout legislation. gm has yet to pay back $21.5 billion in taxpayer funds and a ally still owns $11.4 billion and we know that after seven seasons and four emmys we have to say good night to the rural juror.
